HONOUREE FOR OUTSTANDING INDIVIDUAL PHILANTHROPIST

Humbled by the plight of vulnerable children and youth in our community, Gary Nissen's passion to help 'give a hand up' earns him the honour of the 2007 Outstanding Individual Philanthropist.

"Gary is a philanthropic mentor to those who know him and an inspiration to those whose lives he has touched," says Jenifer van Meenen, Director of Development and Communications, Big Brothers and Big Sisters (BBBS) of Calgary and Area. "He is a truly remarkable example of the spirit of generosity."

A true community leader, Gary's philanthropic influence extends beyond BBBS. He has been a supporter of Safe Haven Foundation for the past seven years and presently serves as vice-president on their board. He has served as president of the Calgary Bow River Canadian Progress Club and also supports Kids Cancer Care Foundation, Inn from the Cold Society and many other charities.

Gary describes one of his most remarkable experiences: "What touched me the most was the time I spent at EvenStart which is a pre-school program for vulnerable children. It was so memorable to see these innocent little kids who are exposed to abuse, poverty and neglect learn and interact in a positive manner with smiles on their faces. It certainly made me feel like I was making a difference."

"It is my personal passion to support the great organizations in which I am involved," says Gary, "so that more and more children have the opportunity to grow into happy, productive adults who can then make their own mark in the world and then hopefully they too will pay it forward."

"I hope this recognition will provide me with the opportunity to leverage my own giving and to persuade others to open their hearts to see what a difference they can make in this world where not everyone is provided with the support and encouragement they need to become all that they can be."
