AMANDA AND SAMANTHA BROWN
HONOUREES FOR OUTSTANDING YOUTH PHILANTHROPIST

Nominated By: Kids Cancer Care Foundation Of Alberta

The 2007 Generosity of Spirit™ Outstanding Youth Philanthropist goes to a dynamic duo – sisters, Samantha and Amanda Brown.

Starting to volunteer from the time they were in strollers, they exemplify that it's never too early to become a part of the community and not just live in it.

Through repeated selfless donations of their waist-length hair to Angel Hair for Kids, annual fundraisers in support of sending kids with cancer to summer camp, weekly visits with seniors, and organizing of Christmas hampers, Samantha and Amanda make philanthropy a part of their life.

"They have demonstrated incredible leadership, strong organizational skills, unwavering enthusiasm and amazing compassion for others," says Trish Matheson, Kids Cancer Care Foundation of Alberta.

"If I wasn't volunteering," says 12 year old Amanda, "I'd be missing a big part of my life. When kids ask me how we do it, I tell them to find something they really like doing and see if anyone else would like to help."

Fourteen year old "Samantha's work ethic, knowledge, and personality make her a natural role model for those around her," says Bruce Barrs, coordinator of Calgary Disaster Services. As a junior facilitator with Minds in Motion at the University of Calgary, Samantha works with younger children to help explore their interests in science and engineering.

"My advice to kids about helping others," says Samantha, "is to just try it. It's so much fun and it's cool."

"I'm always inspired by their energy and spirit of giving," says their mom, Jennifer Brown. "Every person is an important part of the community and can participate in so many ways contributing to an open-minded and helpful society."
