HONOUREES FOR OUTSTANDING FAMILY PHILANTHROPIST

With an overwhelming pride in their family heritage with roots dating back to the early 1900s, the Brawn family shines in their recollection of how their family has made its mark in Calgary and community for more than a century.

Now, generations after the family first arrived in Canada, the modern day Brawns are recognized for their contributions to our community as the 2007 Generosity of Spirit™ Honouree for Outstanding Family Philanthropist.

Recently, the family and their Foundation took the bold step of making a half million dollar financial commitment to the new athletic Fieldhouse at SAIT.

"Our family believes in the impact that sports and recreation play in students' lives through building school pride, promoting healthy lifestyles and encouraging lifelong relationships," says Dean Brawn, VP Business Development, Calibre Environmental and SAIT alumnus.

"We want to give back to Calgary and surrounding area because Calgary has been good to us," says Sheryl Whyte, who suggests creating a family foundation is a great way for families to work together.

The Brawn Family Foundation is led by Bob and Carole Brawn and managed by their children, Sheryl Whyte, Dean Brawn, Kelley Buckley and Patti DeDominicis. As grandchildren turn 18, they are invited to participate in the Foundation and assist in the selection of recipients. All family members are involved in making charitable donations to contribute to the capital of the Foundation.

"We were all raised with a philanthropic spirit by Mom and Dad, and were instilled with a sense of giving," says Dean. "Find a passion and contribute how you can, when you can; whether it be volunteering time, personal expertise and resources, or financial assistance; we are all a part of a greater community that we need to contribute to as best we can in order to keep it great!"
