BP VOLUNTEERS – CALGARY RETIREES
HONOUREES FOR OUTSTANDING GROUP PHILANTHROPIST

Nominated By: Habitat For Humanity Calgary

Formed in 1994, BP Canada Energy Company Retiree Volunteer Group (BP Retiree Group) works tirelessly to support children, those who are hungry and those who are homeless. In 2007, they are honoured for their consistent and outstanding efforts as the Generosity of Spirit™ Outstanding Group Philanthropist.

"They are reliable, committed and still manage to have fun," says Sandi Ferchau, Habitat for Humanity. "The BP Retirees were instrumental in establishing our Habitat ReStore in Calgary. This covers all of the overhead costs for Habitat for Humanity Calgary."

Over the years they have worked on 40 of the 70 homes built by Habitat for Humanity, including the first built in 1992. They have also been an important part of Habitat's Playhouse Raffle fundraiser since its inception 12 years ago."We have the time and skills to make a difference in our community," says group member Lloyd Horn. "There is no greater reward than the happy smiling faces of families, especially the children, we see at every dedication by Habitat for Humanity. The excitement is contagious."

"We've worked with a number of the people who are in our Retiree Group for long periods of our lives," says Lloyd. "The work we do allows us to reconnect. BP Energy is a strong supporter of our efforts and backs our work with contributions to the organizations we believe in. Overall it is teamwork that gets results and makes us feel good about what we do."

With an impressive 23,254 hours in community service activities last year, this diverse and multi-faceted group also single handedly delivers several tonnes of root vegetables to the Calgary Interfaith Foodbank each year from their "Garden of Eat'n" that they plant, weed and harvest. "The women of our 'Yarnburners' group," says Lloyd, "make an incredible amount of products from donated wool for the Women's Shelter." This colony of creativity and activity makes a mark and leaves a legacy in the Calgary community.
